POSITION:         
 
Responsible for day-to-day management, delivery quality,
performance and safety of the workshop and yard functions including work environment, processes, activities, deliverables, productivity, inventory, and cost control.
Responsible for managing, supervising, and developing workshop and yard teams and always leading by example.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Workshop/Yard Management
  • To oversee and carry out pump servicing, maintenance, repairs, modifications, and improvements as required within the workshop.
  • Ensure effective planning and scheduling to meet deadlines, prioritizing and managing time and resources effectively to maximise productivity and provide a quality service.
  • Manage workshop and yard workspace and storage areas to ensure they are organised in a way that supports good productivity and are kept clean and tidy.
  • Manage waste, material expenditure and employee overtime to ensure effective cost control within agreed budgets and to maximise sales and profitability.
  • Ensure clear, open, and effective working relationships and channels of communication are maintained, working with managers, hire desk, fleet, and technical teams to ensure prompt resolution of issues and to help drive continuous improvement.
  • To manage and control goods in and goods out, working with other departmental functions to ensure smooth and safe operations.
  • Ensure that fleet servicing is adhered to, and any equipment returned damaged follows the procedure for documenting this to allow for customer recovery where applicable.
  • Provide over the phone advice and guidance to customers to resolve mechanical breakdown issues, to a level which minimises the need for an engineer call out.
  • Arrange for suitable engineers to attend breakdowns, keeping the customer informed throughout.
  • Keep the Branch Manager/Assistant Branch Manager informed on matters including performance, safety, quality, and conduct.
  • Ensure suitable and timely replacement of resources where necessary; procure parts and spares where necessary to make sure equipment is available to hire as soon as possible within the approved authority limits.
  • Support and participate in an on-call rota to ensure 24/7 emergency cover.

  • Supervise, manage, and motivate workshop and yard operations staff to maximise productivity and performance, and achieve quality results.
  • Interview, select and induct new team members, in liaison with the Branch Manager/Assistant Branch manager.
  • Ensure all team members are appropriately trained and competent to perform their duties safely and effectively throughout their employment. Supervise and ensure delivery of effective workshops training programmes.
  • Work with the Branch Manager, develop and deliver objectives and to the workshop and yard teams, and deliver Toolbox Talk’s and Safety Bulletins, keeping records to evidence this.
  • Proactively manage team development, performance, and absence in line with company policies and processes, promptly addressing any areas of underperformance
  • Proactively collaborate with colleagues to help drive continuous improvement.
 
Quality, Health, Safety and Environment
 
  • Implement and enforce quality, health, safety and environmental policies, procedures, safe systems of work, PPE, regulations, and legislation. Ensure all aspects of workshop and yard workspace, resources and activities are continually compliant with these.
  • Develop, maintain communication workshop, and yard site and activities risk assessments, seeking input from onsite stakeholders and SHEQ.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording, management and measurement of near misses, incidents, accidents, and quality issues, and promptly escalate concerns and complaints to the Branch Manager/Assistant Branch Manager
  • Implement, manage, and monitor a servicing, maintenance, and inspection schedule for lifting equipment to ensure safe standards of operation and compliance with statutory regulations and legislation (LOLER, PUWER etc.)
  • Ensure all other Company property and equipment is maintained to the required Company and manufacturers standard to prevent any accident or injury to any person or damage to Company property.
  • Conduct and ensure all Safety Sampling is correctly carried out on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure a high standard of housekeeping within the workshop, yard, and surrounding storage areas; these must be kept clean and tidy, including your own working environment.
  • Ensure that all the necessary administration and records required for the control of work within the department is completed accurately and in a timely manner, in line with Company procedures and guidelines.
  • The main responsibilities are outlined above. This is not a definitive list and other tasks/activities may be necessary as the Company’s commercial activities require.
 
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
 
  • Ideally 3 years proven background in leading and managing a workshop and yard function, maximising productivity, quality, and client service, and demanding a strong Health & Safety culture.
  • Proven experience of successfully managing a team and raising standards within a team. Able to motivate, develop and engage a team, and collaborate within the team and across the Company.
  • Experience working with diesel engines to repair and diagnose faults and perform routine maintenance.
  • Be comfortable working in a fast-paced, sometimes high-pressured environment as you will be planning, prioritising, and managing work and resources, whilst ensuring smooth operations and strong outputs
  • Be forward thinking whilst maintaining a methodical, attention to detail approach.
  • Adaptable and flexible to support the business to get the job done understanding the requirements of all stakeholders while maintaining a safe environment for all.
  • A good aptitude for problem solving and decision making.
  • A strong understanding of all SHEQ requirements to uphold high levels of safety adhering to all safety legislation, ensuring staff and visitors are kept safe.
  • Compliant accurate record keeping is important to this role.
  • Computer literate. Be able to use basic Microsoft Packages such as excel / word.
 
A full UK driving licence is required for this position due to the role requiring the successful applicant to travel to and from other locations on occasion.
