Pre interview preparation

Interviews – a living nightmare and unfortunately a necessity at the same time. Somewhat similar to airport security when you endure the long queues, shoes off, shoes on, belt off, belt on to eventually reach the departure lounge where the holiday begins. An interview is the same, it’s essential that we complete the 45 minutes of awkward discourse and silences to be in with a chance of securing the dream job.

But, preparation is key! This can make any interview a much smother process. From researching the company's current CEO, to finding matching black socks to complete your full interview attire. No matter how big or small the impact, it all contributes to a smoother ‘pre interview’ process.

Appropriate interview attire – Despite some of us saying that we don’t judge a book by its cover, it’s inevitable that as humans many of us do. Therefore, making a good impression when first meeting the interviewer is key! You want to look professional, and you want to look like someone they will want to hire!

Keep it simple and comfortable…

Women

  • A suit with a plain blouse, trousers or a knee length skirt
  • A plain dress with a suit jacket

Men

  • A suit with a shirt and tie (Dark coloured suit with a light-coloured shirt is your best option)
  • Shoes

These are just some of the simple outfits that you can choose when dressing for an interview. The main thing to remember is to keep it simple and don’t dress down, regardless of the company’s dress code policy.

Research the company – Look at their website and social media platforms for their most recent news and updates. Focus on what they do as a company and their core values. Are they national or international? Have they been awarded or recognised for their work in recent years (If so, what for)? Do they have any new initiatives?

By researching the company, it will enable you to link your answers in with company stats and information, showing the interviewer that you are keen and have completed your ground work.

Think about questions that you can ask at the end –By asking questions you will gage a better understanding about whether the job is the right one for you! Consider questions about the position, the company’s future and challenges.

 “What do you think are the most important qualities for someone to excel in this role?”

“What is the typical career path for someone in this role?”

“What’s the company’s ambitions for the next five years?”

“What challenges are the department currently facing?”

These are just some examples that you could keep at the back of your mind for when the interview is nearing to an end.
