Paris Darknell Awkward, Interview

Conquering the unusual interview questions!

Sweaty palms, shaky voice, blank mind… we can all relate to these pre interview symptoms that usually kick in around an hour before you shake the hand of the interviewee.

Then twenty minutes into the interview, you feel more relaxed. You’ve delivered your rehearsed comprehensive answers with confidence and eloquence……..

Where do you see yourself in five years?

My goal right now is to find a position at a company where I can grow and take on new challenges over time. Ultimately, I’d like to assume more management responsibilities and get involved in product strategy. But most importantly, I want to work for an organization where I can build a career.”

What is your biggest weakness?

“My weakness is that I’m sometimes too hard on myself when I don’t achieve goals to my full potential.”

What motivates you?

I'm very results-driven. Doing a good job and achieving the desired end result is my primary motivation.”

At this point you loosen up and begin to sit back deeper into the chair, with your answers flowing effortlessly. Then the moment that all of us dread, a question that leaves you hesitant and sweating…..

How would you get an elephant into a refrigerator?

If you were a Microsoft Office programme, which one would you be?

If Germans were the tallest people in the world, how would you prove it?

Pepsi or Coke?

The interviewee has intended for the question to catch you off guard but they won’t expect you to have an immediate answer, so take your time and think creatively about your response. Think about what the company does and the role that you are applying for. Try not to get flustered, attempt to apply reasonable rationale and talk the interviewer confidently and calmly through the steps you’d take to reach a conclusion.

For some of these bizarre questions, there is no right or wrong answer. The interviewee will admire your willingness to embrace an unusual question and answer logically.

So next time you find yourself faced with a strange question, relax and think out of the box. It may even get you a smile from the other side of the desk!
